بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
A community initiative listening to Muslim youth and parents — gathering honest voices to support and facilitate marriage within our communities.
This initiative began after a conversation between a young Muslim in higher education and an older member of the community. The young man expressed his frustration that, although he felt ready to begin considering marriage, meaningful discussions with his parents about taking practical steps had never really taken place. He believed many of his friends were experiencing similar challenges.
Rather than relying on assumptions, it was suggested that a small group of young Muslims meet to discuss the issue and consider whether an anonymous survey could help determine how widespread these experiences were.
The response was overwhelming. Many young people shared similar concerns and felt the topic was rarely discussed openly within the community. Together, they agreed that the first step should be to listen, gather evidence and encourage constructive community dialogue.
That simple conversation became the foundation of this initiative.
وَتَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَىٰ
And cooperate with one another in righteousness and piety.
— Qur'an, Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:2
Marriage is one of the great Sunnahs of our beloved Prophet ﷺ, yet many young Muslims today feel that cultural expectations, financial pressures and modern life have made it increasingly difficult.
Before proposing solutions, we want to hear real experiences from real people — youth and parents alike.
Anonymous surveys allow us to build a clear, honest picture of the challenges our communities face today.
This isn't about assigning blame. It's about opening informed conversations and exploring what support looks like.
Every discussion and recommendation remains grounded in the boundaries of Islam and UK law.
This initiative and its accompanying article and surveys have been reviewed by representatives from the following mosques, who have recognised the value of this research in helping our communities better understand the challenges surrounding marriage.
Please take a few minutes to read the article and complete the survey. Every response helps us build a clearer picture of the realities facing our communities today.
Before completing the survey, read the background article which explains the purpose, context and aims of this initiative.
